I fucking love it. I have no problem with the strange looks I receive for wearing black from head to toe everywhere I go. When black people are bold enough to step out of the box, it is jarring as hell for most people. Especially when a black person stays to themselves & has a calm demeanor. You are actively demolishing the stereotype; living how you want to live. I am full believer in being comfortable in your own skin, as it is the main topic of my blog.
Since I started doing that, I get the strangest of comments. “You act white”, “you date white guys, don’t you?”, & the all-time certified classic of being called a goddamn “oreo”.
You get used to the comments eventually; that’s how you know you have prioritized being yourself over pleasing others. When the ignorance no longer bothers you, there’s a good chance you have achieved some type of peace within you. Life is too short to follow a stereotype just to please others or be completely out of your element even though you’d rather be yourself. Being yourself is freeing, eye opening & inspires others.
It displays confidence as well as a mass amount of self-awareness. Knowing yourself shows others that you cannot be easily manipulated & that you do not let fear run your life. Continue to be out of the box. If you haven’t started yet & need the courage to, take the time to get to know yourself in full. Flaws & all. Experiment with different styles, types of self-expressions, etc. Make it fun, find what makes you feel good & learn to brush off the judgement from family, friends, & the general public. It gets easier with time. Be patient with yourself.
