Hell yes. Well, this introvert does at least. I used to downplay when people would say that something made them “feel alive”. I didn’t think much of it because I had never felt it myself. Growing up, I took the time to understand that I am an introverted person, which automatically made me think that introverts refuse to be in crowds because I had no desire to. What I finally learned was that when introverts love something enough, they can handle crowds no matter how noisy.
I didn’t go to my first concert until I was 27 or so. I figured I would absolutely hate it & be ready to go home within the first 20 minutes of the show. To my surprise, I enjoyed it from start to finish. Maneuvering through crowds while trying to get to your seat is the opposite of fun but the music, the ambience & the energy of the crowd made me forget all of that shit. I wanted more. Even with the bands that I didn’t really know, I still had fun just living in the moment & witnessing others’ excitement.
Concerts also set in stone my love for heavy metal music, specifically metalcore. When I gained the opportunity to go see Spiritbox, my most favorite band, I knew this would make or break if I truly enjoyed the genre as well as if truly liked concerts. When Spiritbox got on stage, I lost my shit, recorded the whole thing & felt my love for the band as well as the genre grow immensely. For the first time ever, I felt bliss. Straight up bliss.
Finding your genre feels like finding a puzzle piece. Something you needed for ages, now finally in your hands. It clicks easily & life starts to make a little more sense. I grew up tolerating pop, jazz & r&b music; thinking those were genre I enjoyed, I wasn’t loving music the way I do now. When I listen to heavy metal it makes me feel confident & motivated to get through this shit we call life.
Overall, going to concerts solidified everything for me. I left that event a brand-new woman, still had the goosebumps all over me long after the show was over by just thinking about how amazing they sound live & in person. I am so glad that I gave concerts a chance & now any opportunity I get, I make my way to metal concerts to see bands that I adore as well as finding new bands to give a listen to.
